This is an astounding statement from Paulson, made even more ludicrous by the fact that he has no clue what the American people care about since they have never been asked (and won't be asked in the future for anything but their checkbooks, thanks):

"Mr. Paulson, appearing on four Sunday news programs as the administration seeks to calm markets and reassure ordinary Americans, said that the $700 billion could be used to help not just American financial institutions but also, in a shift from the original proposal, financial institutions not based in the United States.

“The American people don’t care who owns the financial institution,” he told ABC’s “This Week.” “If the financial institution in this country has problems, it’ll have the same impact whether it’s U.S.- or foreign-owned.” The United States is also working with foreign governments to take actions of their own."


This means, friends, that the bailout funds will be appropriated and our wealth can thereafter be freely granted to any corporation, foreign or domestic, that our unelected leaders decide might be in the interests they divine are the nation's interests because they know these things. I am going to find this portion of the Constitution and will post here again when I find the authorization for that.

My apartment comes with a washing machine called, imposingly, a Goldstar Chaos Hi Tech Washing Machine. I thought it was a dryer too but that doesn't seem to be the case. Korean apartments have these alleys between the living areas and the outside wall in which clothes are dried. In case you didn't see that county map indicating increased Republican voting between 2004 and 2008 before they took it off of the NYTimes page, here is an image of it: This is a fascinating document that I think will be the focus of many studies. Explaining increases only in these areas in the entire country could be very instructive. Andrew Sullivan notes dryly: "Ah, yes, Appalachia and Arkansas. Obviously concerned about marginal tax rates for those earning over $250,000 a year, I suppose."

Americans don't get riled up to protest. Give away billions in taxpayer money to financial fatcats with no accountability--no worries. Refuse to punish war criminal torturers--no problem. The battle cry is...moo. Koreans, on the other hand, live in a vibrant democracy and their political action is a bit more direct.
